I create art to slow the world down — to capture the fleeting beauty of nature before it slips away.
About Karen Gourley
I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland. A place of wild hills, shifting skies, and salt-tinged air. The cliffs and coastlines there shaped my imagination long before I ever picked up a pastel stick. Their untamed beauty still hums quietly beneath everything I paint.
Now I live in New Zealand, where new wildlife and new light have woven themselves into my work. The colours of home and the textures of this land meet in each piece; threads of two worlds stitched together by a shared love of nature.
Nature has always been my guide. From windswept headlands to the small garden outside my door, every walk becomes a slow conversation with the living world. A bird on a branch, a bee in sunlight, the soft rustle of leaves... these small encounters become the beginnings of my paintings.
Before I paint, I often wander with my camera, pausing over the curve of a petal or the shimmer on a wing. Later, with soft pastels in hand, I blend those moments into colour and light, layer by layer, until the piece feels alive, as if you might step inside and hear the breeze moving through it.
My hope is that my work invites you to pause, breathe, and feel that quiet connection too. The one that lives between us and the natural world, waiting to be noticed.
I believe the smallest wonders in nature connect us to something much bigger, to beauty, peace, and purpose. My collectors tell me my work brings them a sense of calm and joy, a daily reminder to pause and breathe. That’s the gift I aim to give through every painting.
"Just received a stunning butterfly original painting from Karen, detail is amazing! Every colour just bursts out, so life like. Bringing nature to life, literally. Pride of place in our living room. The frame we chose just draws out it's beauty even more. Your talent and appreciation for wildlife is apparent"
