Wide Awake - Ruru

The ruru, or morepork, is one of New Zealand's most iconic birds — and one of the hardest to actually spot. Most people know its call long before they ever see one.

I painted this piece as the start of a New Zealand forest birds series, wanting to capture that quiet, watchful stare in soft pastel.

This original was hand-painted on A4 Pastelmat.

I've got a morepork photography trip booked for January, so I'm hoping to spend some real time with them in the wild and paint more from that.
